An Ancient Retelling

Low fantasy retelling MMF

A story everyone thinks they know, retold with one question: what if he lived?

About the book

Jack hates sand. It is in his sandals, his teeth, his dreams. For days there has been nothing but dunes and sky, the white burn of noon giving way to the cold blue hush of night, and he has learned to measure his life in oases: a well, a palm, a stranger who might know the way.

He does not travel alone. Maren has walked beside him since they were children, and somewhere between then and now, friendship became something he no longer has a name for. Flint keeps watch over them both. And Ash, who swears he knows the way, smiles a little too easily.

In a land where old magic still hums beneath the sand, where prophecy is a living thing and every miracle has a price, Jack can mend any wound by taking it into himself, and every mending costs him. Together they follow a rumor toward a cave where an oracle is said to wait.

Everyone knows how this story ends: a kiss in a garden, a hill at dusk, three days of silence. But the desert keeps its secrets, and this time, the story does not end where it was written.

“Sand. As far as the eye could see. I hate sand.”
